In this video, Dr Kunal explains the newest surgical solution to treating greyhounds suffering from corns- Superficial Digital Flexor Tendonectomy. A corn is a hard, circular area of thickened pad tissue that occurs in the toe pads of greyhounds and is found mainly in the pads of the central toes in the front limbs. Corns cause severe lameness especially when walking on hard, uneven surfaces and owners often find their greyhound becomes reluctant to go for walks or play. Corns are caused by repeated mechanical trauma or pressure on the pad. If the pressure to the toe pad is reduced the, corn will grow out and disappear. This latest procedure, involves cutting only the connecting superficial digital flexor tendon causing the effected toe and nail to stick forward but remain in contact with the ground. This releases pressure from the toe pad, allowing the corn to heal and disappear resulting in a much more comfortable and happy greyhound.
