DEASON FAMILY (1976-1986) Saskatchewan family band from Birch Hills, Saskatchewan. They released two albums, one pop and one gospel. The albums were recorded at Ken Singer’s recording studio in Vancouver. The lineup was: Paul Deason (bass, vocals), Lorne Deason (piano, vocals), Laura Deason, Maureen Deason, Sharon Deason and Diana Deason (vocals). The family band played all over Saskatchewan in the seventies and eighties. Their father got them a Traynor PA system from Hal Turner at Gordie Brandt’s, and they all packed into a baby blue 1976 Dodge MaxiWagon and hit the road. Drummers that they worked with included Kim Harris, Wayne Rollack, Del Herter, Rand Luhning and Daryl Lukan. Guitarists who played for them included Larry LeBlanc, Peter LaLonde, Dennis Adams and Ron Bodnarchuk. Occasionally Larry Leland played baritone sax and Doug Berntsen played trumpet. Sharon and Diana also played violin; Sharon also played violin with The Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra. They played for many years at The Prince Albert Winter Festival Variety Shows. The group played at several exhibitions including The Reign of Grain Show at Buffalo Days, Regina, and at various clubs including the Imperial Room at the King George in Saskatoon, The Louis Riel in Prince Albert, and The Coach and Three in Melfort. They played for many Kinsmen functions including New Year’s Eve at The Sheraton Top of the Inn in Saskatoon. They also hosted a hospitality room for National Kinsmen President Jim Scarrow at the St. Regis Hotel in Winnipeg. They played for the annual Raven Hop in Thompson, Manitoba. They worked several times with Les Pavelich and Neil Headrick who had a comedy act known as Metro and Jacques Strap. They also put on several community concerts in Weldon and Birch Hills. Maureen also sang the national anthem for several years at Saskatoon Blades games. Paul also played bass for a local PA group called Charlemagne, with Steve Herriott and Dean Kushneryk. Lorne also played keyboards with Penny Arcade in Prince Albert, which was guitarist Bill Lamb’s band, with Dave Bader on bass. Lorne also played with PS & Jamie in Saskatoon. The family band was hired 2 summers in a row at the King George Hotel for the Red Garter Saloon. Ned Powers wrote a feature story on July 10 1976, and another one ten years later on July 5, 1986. Ned described them as "a diamond in the rough". The band performed at Expo 86 in Vancouver in the Saskatchewan Pavilion. Lorne was doing solo gigs through the mid 1980s, including a two year stint for his friends Clarence Kwok and Dick Law at the WK Kitchen in Prince Albert, Tuckers on 22nd Street in Saskatoon (George Tennant’s club) and at the Fireplace Lodge at the PA Travelodge. Lorne also accompanied many local singers including Nancy Olsen, Linda Mackie, Brynn Boback, Rhonda Oftedal and Connie Ballendine. When they played at Xanadu for Wilson Ng in Saskatoon they were joined by Kris Tataryn on vocals, Wayne Rollack on drums and Terry Collison on bass. Lorne also played in a blues combo called Double Gold with his friend blues guitarist Glenn Burrell at The Golden Anchor on 8th Street in Saskatoon. For three years Lorne and his friend Bob Crowe were musical directors of the annual Legal Follies Show at the Centennial Auditorium in Saskatoon. They recruited the Gillis Brothers, (Richard and Glen, trumpet and sax) for that show to do songs like Stevie Wonder’s Isn’t She Lovely and Chicago’s Beginnings. All of the siblings currently reside in Saskatoon, except Lorne who calls Moose Jaw home. 1976 KING GEORGE HOTEL (Imperial Room) - JUL 10 17 1977 KING GEORGE HOTEL (Imperial Room) - JUL 9 16 1985 TUCKERS (22nd St) - SEP 14 / OCT 5 / NOV 2 - Lorne Deason 1985 XANADU (8th St) - DEC 31 ($50 per couple new years eve) - Deasons 1986 XANADU - MAY 24 / JUN 14 - Lorne Deason
