On 7 December 2025, Atlantic Fire & Rescue conducted a fire risk assessment in the Dunoon informal settlement. What we found was alarming — extremely dense structures, illegal electricity connections, narrow zigzag roads and dead ends, and almost no access for fire trucks or emergency vehicles. Even our Land Cruisers struggled to move through the area. At night, these conditions become even more dangerous. Just weeks later, on 9 January 2026, that risk became reality. A devastating fire tore through Dunoon Site 5, destroying more than 1,500 homes. Despite trained community volunteers successfully containing four fires in previous months, this blaze was simply too large and driven by strong winds. Once fires reach this scale, fire extinguishers alone are no longer effective — aerial support was needed to make a difference. This is why early response matters. Five to ten minutes can mean the difference between a small, containable fire and total devastation. Fire extinguishers, training, and community readiness save lives — but prevention and access are just as critical. This is the reality on the ground.
