Local lore claims Uther and 100 of his men were poisoned at a well on the site by the Saxons. A famous local couplet recalls his unsuccessful attempt to divert the river: "Let Uther Pendragon do what he can, Eden will run where Eden ran." The Reality: Archaeological evidence suggests the first fortification was a Norman ringwork castle built around the 12th century. Infamous Owner: One of its early recorded owners was Sir Hugh de Morville, one of the four knights who murdered Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury, in 1170. The Clifford Legacy: The castle later became a prized possession of the powerful Clifford family for centuries. It was repeatedly damaged by Scottish raids (notably in 1341 and 1541) and rebuilt.
