Welcome to a truly immersive experience! Put on your VR headset or move your device to explore the breathtaking, atmospheric ruins of Pendragon Castle in stunning 360-degree virtual reality. Journey with us to the remote and dramatic Mallerstang Valley in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, Cumbria. You'll walk right up to the ancient walls, stand above the banks of the River Eden, and feel the weight of centuries of history surrounding you. 📜 Castle History & Legend Pendragon Castle is steeped in both verified history and captivating legend: The Legend: The castle is famously, though perhaps apocryphally, linked to King Arthur's father, Uther Pendragon, who is said to have built the original fortress here in the 5th century. Local lore claims Uther and 100 of his men were poisoned at a well on the site by the Saxons. A famous local couplet recalls his unsuccessful attempt to divert the river: "Let Uther Pendragon do what he can, Eden will run where Eden ran." The Reality: Archaeological evidence suggests the first fortification was a Norman ringwork castle built around the 12th century. Infamous Owner: One of its early recorded owners was Sir Hugh de Morville, one of the four knights who murdered Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury, in 1170. The Clifford Legacy: The castle later became a prized possession of the powerful Clifford family for centuries. It was repeatedly damaged by Scottish raids (notably in 1341 and 1541) and rebuilt. Lady Anne Clifford: In the 17th century, the legendary Lady Anne Clifford lovingly restored Pendragon, along with several other northern castles. However, it was later dismantled by her successor and gradually fell into the romantic ruin we see today. Take a virtual stroll and let the magic of Arthurian legend and centuries of northern English history wash over you.
