Citizens of Monaco are not allowed to gamble, nor even visit the casinos. 2. You may take the train, your helicopter or your yacht (if you have one) if you want to go to Monaco but please, no private jets. There are no airports in Monaco. Don’t have enough change to ride the train? Cote d’Azur Airport in Nice, France is just a 30-minute ride to Monaco’s capital. 3. Where is Monaco on the map? Chances are you won’t spot it. And stop searching for the capital of Monaco; the country is a city-state. The Principality of Monaco is the second smallest country in the world, after Vatican City. Monaco's total area is only 2 square kilometers. 4. Behind Monza, the Circuit de Monaco is the second most visited in F1 history. It made its debut on the Formula 1 calendar in the championship’s inaugural season in 1950, before becoming a permanent fixture to the schedule in 1955. This year’s event will be the 61st Monaco Grand Prix. 5. Monaco is a constitutional monarchy/principality ruled by a descendant of Grimaldi family, and the oldest ruling house in Europe. Up to 2002, it was understood that if there were no heirs of the Grimaldi to rule to country, control of the country would be taken up by France. A treaty between France and Monaco in 2002 meant that should the Grimaldi family leave no heirs, Monaco would still retain its status as an independent nation. 6. People native to Monaco are called Monegasque. A person born in a foreign country but resident in Monaco is a Monacan. Monaco is unusual because the native Monegasques people are actually in the minority in the country, making up less than a fifth of Monaco's population. The population is made up mostly of wealthy foreigners. 7. Monaco's biggest football team is AS Monaco which plays in the top league of French football, Ligue 1. Over half of the country's population is able to fit into the team's stadium, Stade Louis II. Though based in Monaco, the club is regarded as a French club, as the club plays in the French football league system, and because the principality of Monaco is not a member of UEFA.[3][4] Monaco is one of the most successful clubs in France, having won seven league titles and five Coupe de France trophies. The club has also regularly competed in European football having been runners-up in the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1992 and the UEFA Champions League in 2004.
