Just two days after the devastating barn fire that claimed 36 horses in Randolph County, both the local and horse community are doing their part, rallying around those who need support after such a tragic loss. That fire destroyed Callicutt Stables, a respected, multi-generational family operation known for its specialized training and care of Tennessee walking horses. According to the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders’ and Exhibitors' Association, the loss is being felt far beyond Seagrove. Mark Farrar, ceo of the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders’ and Exhibitors’ Association, says the tragedy is prompting barn owners nationwide to review safety procedures. "When a barn is in this situation, it’s terrible, and it's something that’s making us all take a close look at all of the facilities that our horses are housed and trained in, said Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders’ and Exhibitors' Association CEO Mark Farrar. The North Carolina Walking Horse Association has since established a relief fund, and both state and national breed registries are assisting with registration papers and breeding records. Farrar says Tennessee walking horses have been selectively bred for more than 150 years, and proven Tennessee walking show horses can be worth up to six figures. "Wheather you're going to have a Tennessee walking horse that you want to show, or want to go trailing riding with, or want to do field trials with, or western versace with. It’s that smooth gate that attracts you to them to begin with," said Farrar. Comments and posts across social media show support in the community. Farrar says, in the hours after the fire. But beyond competitions and financial value, Farrar says these horses represent family, companionship, and daily routine. "I did speak to the Callicutts, and kind of the point I made earlier about being in the people business as the horse business and the magnificent horses are what bring us together in the first place, but the people are what make it enjoyable and make it something that we want to be a part of," said Farrar. I spoke with Randolph County EMS officials from the fire marshal's office. They say they have no new information to release and that the root cause of the fire is still under investigation.
