Australian researchers have reached a "pivotal point" in the development of a vaccine against the deadly novel coronavirus COVID-19 according to senior CSIRO researcher Professor Trevor Drew. The coronavirus has ground the world economy to a virtual standstill, with the highly infectious pathogen infecting 938,373 people and causing 47,273 deaths. Professor Drew told Sky News his team in the animal health laboratory has put a vaccine into ferrets and watched the "progress of the replication of the virus." He said once they study how the virus replicates, researchers vaccinate the ferret to see if the vaccine gives a "level of protection" to the ferret. He warned however if the vaccine is successful, a viable vaccine is still a long way off. "The earliest we might see these trials near completion is the beginning of next year, but more realistically the middle of next year."
