Mauritius is a semi-tropical island of 2,040 km2 in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Due to its isolated location it was unpopulated until the 16th century when the Dutch Arrived and founded Dutch Mauritius. Although the island was first discovered by the Portuguese in 1507. Mauritius had no predators and therefore the wildlife - mostly birds - could evolve into unique species. Most importantly the Dodo bird which quickly extinct after the Dutch arrival. Although Mauritius was later conquered by the French who called the island 'Ile de France' (island of France) the British conquered the island later from the French and nowadays Mauritius is part of the British Commonwealth. Mauritius is officially part of Africa and has a population of 1,3 million.
