30 YEARS IN THE MAKING. FEATURING HASIL ADKINS AND A CAST OF THOUSANDS. Or, at least, video that was shot circa 1996-2000 focused on a few rural and unusual miscreants, plus our sponsor, the late, great Haze of Boone County, WV. Then the 00s took over. My video camera was lifted in a robbery in 2001. The original 8mm videotapes, not stolen, lingered (and managed to survive, mostly) in storage/limbo. And then: 2025 rolls around, and JT Dockery (speaking) transfers the old analog tape into digital information, editing that digital information digitally (sometimes using all five fingers on one hand at a time) and, blammo: YELLOW YODEL NO 5. Somewhere between Wallace Berman's ALEPH and Bruce Conner's A MOVIE but closer to Jean Yarbrough's HILLBILLYS IN A HAUNTED HOUSE, and like a chance encounter between a video camera and some feral humans with out of tune instruments up a holler somewheres, there (where now then?) falls the shadow of YELLOW YODEL NO 5... Originally conceived as CHEESEBURGER & FRIES: THE MOVIE by Jeffrey Scott Holland (Cheeseburger) & JT Dockery (I, Fries), authorship of the raw footage is as much JSH's as my own. In that fertile, fervid, and arguably often fetid time period, there were many irons in many collaborative fires splatting grease from the griddle, shot on video or not. So, I end up after all the complications with what survives of my own, personal videotapes shot on my own (eventually stolen) camera (JSH had his own camera/footage of which I did not have access for this romp/edit) and thusly my edit (I can be granted both credit and blame) represents my 2025-6 version/a version culled from what artifacts remain/remain available to me): not THEE version. Like with the unused footage by William Burroughs and Antony Balch that Genesis P-Orridge found among Balch's possessions after the filmmaker's death, then edited, adding their own soundtrack, releasing that as GHOSTS AT NO. 9: Who would be the "author" of that variant, what would be any definitive version or defining, single "author"? Following, this Yodel in a Yellow 5-way stands as some kind of preservative jam before all these ghosts of flicker from my back video-pages in turn flicker off unseen into total oblivion, authorship being a slippery fish. But for anyone having read this far: 'nuff said. The final detail I'll add is that the online version has an extra audio-only epilogue, akin to a bonus added to a theatrical release on a home video version of a commercial motion picture. The cut I've prepared to project at screenings for live audiences does not include the extra epilogue. The inclusion here represents a longer fade out for those with the time to fade out along with that extra fading. Anyways, don't take the YELLOW YODEL NO 5. Unless you have already. But, like, how do any of us know anything for sure... What was I saying?
