This video explains the science behind why braking distance increases so rapidly with higher speeds. The braking distance of a vehicle is one of two distances that contribute to its overall stopping distance, the other being the thinking distance. Braking distance is affected by physical factors such as road conditions, tyre conditions and brake conditions. It is also affected by the speed of the vehicle. While thinking distance scales linearly with velocity i.e. s ∝ v, braking distance is proportional to velocity squared i.e. s ∝ v^2. This is why it is important for cars to obey the speed limit; a slight increase in speed can have a big impact on its stopping distance.
