Does a deterministic universe mean we’re just passengers? I coded Conway’s Game of Life on a garden table to explore a question that has haunted physics and philosophy for centuries: If the laws of nature are fixed, is free will an illusion? In this video, we dive into the "Dark Beacon" studio to look at how complexity, agency, and computation emerge from simple, rule-bound systems. We often assume that if the future is determined, it must be predictable. But as mathematician John Conway showed us, a system can be fully deterministic and still be impossible to "skip ahead" of. Whether we live in a simulation or a physicalist reality, the "computation" of existence must be performed one step at a time. In this video, we explore: Conway’s Game of Life: The rules of birth, survival, and death in a 2D universe. Determinism vs. Predictability: Why knowing the rules doesn't mean you know the end. The Emergence of Agency: How causal structures (like us) shape the future from within the rules. Computational Universality: The terrifying potential of a grid that can compute anything. The "Developer Mode" Theory: Exploring the boundaries of simulation theory and external intervention. Whether you're interested in the philosophy of mind, cellular automata, or the "glitch in the matrix" style of simulation theory, this deep dive reframes what it means to make a choice. "The universe doesn't erase you. It only tells you where you are." 00:00 – Intro 00:17 – Determinism vs non-determinism 00:02:10:01 – Game of Life explained 00:03:51:09 – The present makes the future 00:05:23:05 – The future needs the past 00:06:27:04 – Game of Life is a computer 00:07:35:09 – What does it mean for free will? 00:10:10:17 – Simulation theory #FreeWill #ConwaysGameOfLife #SimulationTheory #Philosophy #Science
