The Latécoère 28 is one of the most iconic aircraft of the golden age of aviation. Designed in the late 1920s by the French manufacturer Latécoère, this single-engine aircraft played a key role in the legendary Aéropostale network, carrying mail and passengers across Africa and South America and helping connect continents in record time. Piloted by aviation pioneers such as Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, Jean Mermoz and Henri Guillaumet, the Latécoère 28 symbolizes courage, innovation and the spirit of exploration that defined the early days of commercial aviation. The experiences of these pilots would later inspire Saint-Exupéry’s literary works, including The Little Prince. In 1930, Jean Mermoz made history by completing the first commercial transatlantic mail flight between Senegal and Brazil aboard a floatplane version of the Latécoère 28, opening a new chapter in global aviation. Today, no original Latécoère 28 survives. To bring this legendary aircraft back to life, the Cercle des Machines Volantes in Compiègne has launched an ambitious project to reconstruct a flying example using original plans, historic documentation and modern engineering. Supported by the Latécoère Foundation, this project is both a technical challenge and a tribute to the pioneers of the Aéropostale — keeping alive the spirit of adventure that inspired generations of aviators and storytellers.
