Infections during breastfeeding cause a lot of pain, ill-health and emotional trouble to new mothers. Early diagnosis and treatment of lactational breast infections is important for both the mother and the baby. Early mastitis can often be treated with oral antibiotics. Once an abscess develops, ultrasound guided abscess aspiration with a needle is usually the first line of treatment. The procedure is done under local anaesthesia in the clinic. The pus is sent to culture to guided antibiotic therapy. A repeat aspiration may be needed in some women. Incision and drainage as a surgical procedure may be required in some cases.
