In this video, follow along with Jennifer Abbott, owner of Hear at Home Mobile Hearing Clinic in North Vancouver, as she explains how to prepare for an earwax removal appointment. As a hearing aid practitioner, we'd like to highlight the impact of cerumen, commonly known as earwax, on hearing aids. Earwax plays a crucial role in maintaining ear health. It serves as a waterproof lining for the ear canal, safeguarding it and the eardrum from potential infections caused by germs. Additionally, it acts as a natural barrier, trapping dirt, dust, and other particles, thus preventing them from reaching and potentially damaging or irritating the eardrum. However, when it comes to hearing aids, excessive earwax buildup can pose challenges. Earwax can accumulate on the hearing aid, particularly on the speaker or microphone ports, leading to reduced sound quality and performance. It can even cause temporary malfunction of the hearing aid if not cleaned regularly. For optimal hearing aid function, regular cleaning and maintenance are essential to prevent earwax-related issues. It's also advisable for users to have their ears checked periodically for earwax buildup, to ensure both their ear health and the optimal functioning of their hearing aids.
