HE SHE HA IS TALK OF SEOUL ============================== The lithe form and husky voice of entertainer Ha Ri-soo seem to be everywhere: in a film, in a music video, in photo shoots for makeup and wedding gowns, and before mesmerized studio audiences. Television talk shows can't get enough of the svelte sex symbol and her sensual dances. People gab about her at home and on the street, in offices, corridors and coffee shops. Yet Ha isn't your average, flash-in-the-pan starlet whose climb to the top of South Korea's assembly-line world of entertainment usually presages an equally abrupt fall. She's a transsexual. Ha's ascendance this year is especially striking in South Korea, where the centuries-old mainstays of Confucian ethics - a male-dominated hierarchy and uniformity - pervade the nation of 47 million people. Is the South really loosening up? "I think the society and culture is changing in Korea and it should change," Ha said in an interview at a beauty salon in Seoul's fashionable Hong-dae district. Her hair in curlers, she sat in front of a mirror as makeup artists dabbed her face with lipstick, eyeliner and powder. "Transsexuals haven't killed or cheated anyone. Why should they be mistreated when they haven't done anything wrong to others?" Ha said. A lot of South Koreans agree, but their fascination with Ha reflects as much prurience as a newfound tolerance for the maverick, or minorities. South Korean men must serve 26 months in the armed forces, a precaution in the event of conflict with communist North Korea.
