"La bella Gigogin" is a patriotic song from the 19th century in Italy, which became famous during the Second Italian War of Independence. It was written in 1858 by the Milanese composer Paolo Giorza, who was inspired by Lombard and Piedmontese folk songs ( Gigogin would be a Piedmontese diminutive for "Teresa"). The text is written in a mixture of popular Italian and Lombard. It was first performed on 31 December 1858 at the Teatro Carcano in Milan , and quickly became a huge hit. It is a song full of allegories and references to the political situation of the time, namely the Austrian rule in Milan and the call to Victor Emanuel II to move to liberate Italy. In fact it had become so popular that it was also played by Austrian military bands: at the Battle of Magenta it had been sung by both the French and the Austrians. Today his melody is used as the slogan of the radio newspaper of Lombardy, on RAI.
