Reno Air Races Exciting 2023 STOL Drag Races - Sunday

A competition sport with growing popularity is STOL (Short TakeOff and Landing) drag racing, in which two back-country aircraft take off, fly a 2,000-foot straight line to a full-stop landing before turning around and racing back to the starting point. Airmanship skills, including judicious use of side-slipping, adds to the visual drama. At Stead airport during the National Championship Air Races in September 2023, morning STOL drag races were dramatic to watch as the bush planes dropped out of sight due to the rise and fall of the runway and dirt shoulders. The first three places in this year's STOL racing at Reno went to: 1. Steve Henry #44 Highlander; 2.Eddie Sanches #48, Highlander; and 3. Tim Schelhorn #73, Carbon Cub. This year's standings at Reno were listed for 23 aircraft in competition.
