Security Council. The U.S. National Tennis Finals, and 1946 World Series. The film begins with a title card: “Operation Crossroads; 4th atomic bomb exploded at Bikini in awesome test” (0:26). A B-29 bomber, Dave’s Dream, is readied for a test of the 4th atomic bomb explosion at Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands on July 1, 1946. Navy Vice Admiral William H.P. Blandy gives the order for the operation (0:50); signal flags run up the pole. Army drone planes fly into the atomic cloud to photograph the incident and take measurements (1:05). View of the atomic cloud at 1:41. Ruins of the Japanese cruiser, Sakawa, which was used as a target during the test (2:00). Title card: “U.S.-Soviet Clash At U.N. Council” (2:18). Chairman Oskar Lange of Poland (2:34). Soviet delegate Andrei Gromyko argues for the admission of Mongolia and Albania to the United Nations (2:47). U.S. delegate Herschel Johnson threatens a veto, since the U.S. wants to admit eight countries (3:02). Title card: “National Tennis Finals” (3:27). The women’s 1946 U.S. National Tennis Championships (now known as the U.S. Open) in Forest Hills, New York (3:30); Pauline Betz defeats Doris Hart. Men’s finalist Jack Kramer defeats Tom Brown (4:08). Title card: “Cards win World Series” (4:32). The St. Louis Cardinals defeat the Boston Red Sox at Sportsman’s Park in St. Louis (4:43); players Dave Ferris, Harry Walker, Murray Dixon, Red Schoendienst, Harry Brecheen, George Metkovich, Dom DiMaggio, Enos Slaughter, Bob Klinger, and Dick Russell are shown. Title card: “Soft Coal Strike — Lewis Showdown with U.S.” (6:20). John L. Lewis announces the cancellation of a government coal contract (6:32); as a result, over 400,000 miners went on strike. Municipal Court Criminal Division sign (6:47). Lewis exits the building (6:52); he was found guilty of contempt of court and fined $10,000. Lewis called off the strike until March 1947. Title card: “Pope creates 32 cardinals” (7:11). In Rome, Pope Pius XII names 32 new cardinals from 19 countries, then the greatest number created at one time (7:33), including Cardinal John Lennon from St. Louis (8:00), who receives his red hat, and Francis Spellman of New York (8:35).
