Hunawihr is a commune in the Haut-Rhin department in Grand Est in north-eastern France. The village is a member of the Les Plus Beaux Villages de France ("The most beautiful villages of France") association. Hunawihr is one of the countless beautiful villages on the 'Route des vins d'Alsace'. Alsace is a bit of a strange region in France. They speak and act very French there, but the names of the villages, towns and dishes still make you think you are in Germany. That makes it anything but annoying, because Alsace is historically the border area between the two great cultures of Western Europe: Germany and France. As a border region, Alsace has a rather dynamic past in which wars have more than once been a disaster for the area. Thanks to its strategic location and good accessibility by the Rhine, Alsace has always been able to recover. Alsace is still a prosperous region with a large population by French standards. The Alsatians live in beautiful villages that are fairly close to each other. For example, Hunawihr is located next to Riquewihr, also a Beaux Village, and the slightly larger Ribeauville is just around the corner. That is certainly a nice village. If you have a bicycle with you, you can easily cycle it. There is even a cycle path that runs straight through the vineyards. By the way, it is an idea to park your car in Hunawihr and then walk to Riquewihr because the parking lot can be busy there. Church of Hunawihr. If you are in Hunawihr, a visit to the church is definitely worthwhile. While most churches in France are located in the middle of the village, Hunawihr's is located on the edge of the village. It is a special specimen in several respects. The church stands a little higher among the vines. This strategic location is further underlined by the fact that the building looks more like a fortress than a church. In addition, there is a solid wall around the church with only one entrance that is considerably fortified. It is clear that this is a fighting church, but that was mainly in the past, because now everything seems peaceful in Alsace. It is very remarkable that the church is now used by both Protestants and Catholics. In the morning the Catholic worship service is given in the choir, in the afternoon the Protestants use the nave. In addition to the nice streets, the view of the vineyards and the surroundings, this beautiful village in Alsace has two other very nice attractions. Just outside the village there is a butterfly garden and a small zoo with native animals. Storks. Alsace has always attracted many Storks. But although the birds are seen as the bringer of good news and a sign of prosperity, things were not going well for the birds in Alsace in the 1970s. The population declined rapidly due to hunting, pollution and the many high-voltage cables. To save the storks for the region, a number of volunteers decided to create a park for the birds in order to increase their numbers in Alsace. And they succeeded because in 2013 more than a thousand storks were raised and released by the park. The park thought that by keeping the storks indoors for three years, they would curb the animals' wanderlust. The annual migration to Africa caused many victims among the birds. This tactic turned out to be a limited success: some animals stay in the Hunawihr area all year round, but many cannot resist the migration south and then you always have to wait and see whether you will see them again in the spring. In the Area. Hunawihr is located in the middle of the Alsace wine region. The famous 'route des vins d'Alsace' runs past the village and this route has been awarded no less than three stars by the well-known Michelin guide. Right next to Hunawihr on one side is Riquewihr, a tourist attraction. Ribeauville is located on the north side: a slightly larger town with beautiful houses and streets where you can eat and drink. A little further north is Haut-Koenigbourg castle.
