The World Trade Center (WTC) is a major complex of buildings in Lower Manhattan, New York City known around the world for business, remembrance, and architecture. It stands near the Hudson River at the southwestern tip of Manhattan, not far from Wall Street. History and Significance The original World Trade Center opened in 1973 and included the iconic Twin Towers. Each tower had 110 floors and they briefly were the tallest buildings in the world. The site was hit by a major terrorist attack on September 11, 2001, when hijacked airplanes struck both towers. Both towers collapsed, killing nearly 3,000 people and devastating the surrounding area. Before 2001, there had also been a bombing at the complex in 1993 that injured many and damaged an underground parking garage. Rebuilding and the New Complex After 2001 the site was redeveloped. The World Trade Center today includes: One World Trade Center (sometimes called the Freedom Tower). It opened in 2014, stands 104 stories tall, and is now the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere. Other skyscrapers like 3 World Trade Center and 4 World Trade Center are also complete. 2 World Trade Center and 5 World Trade Center still have sites prepared and await full construction. Memorials, Museums, and Public Spaces The National September 11 Memorial & Museum honors those killed on September 11 and in the 1993 attack. The memorial features two large reflecting pools set in the footprints of the original Twin Towers. The museum offers exhibits about the attacks and their impact on New York City and the world. Liberty Park and other public spaces offer areas for reflection and everyday activity. Transit and Activities The World Trade Center site also includes one of New York’s busiest transit hubs (The Oculus), shops, restaurants, art installations, and access to multiple subway lines and regional trains. What It Means Today The World Trade Center has a dual identity. It’s a working commercial and business district with offices and shops, and it’s also a place of remembrance that hundreds of thousands of visitors come to each year to pay respects and learn about history.
