Sergei Rachmaninoff: Isle of the Dead, symphonic poem, Op. 29 Izmir State Symphony Orchestra (İzmir Devlet Senfoni Orkestrası) Conductor: Can Okan Ahmed Adnan Saygun Art Center, Izmir, Turkey 20.01.2023 Rachmaninoff completed his symphonic poem, named Isle of the Dead after the famous painting by Swiss artist Arnold Böcklin, in 1908. It is well known that the composer saw not the famous later ones, but black and white version of the painting and inspired by it. The composition process finished in Dresden. The music is one of the typical examples of late romantic style. It is full of melancholy and Russian pessimism. The main theme of symphonic poem is "Dies irae", a classic plainchant Rachmaninoff used so many times. It calls a large scale orchestra, which is also very typical for late romantic period in music. Rachmaninoff himself recorded Isle of The Dead by conduct the Philadelphia Orchestra, released by RCA label. Today, it is frequently played and recorded by many orchestras all over the world. The aesthetic side of this music is surely so impressive and gives an example of beauty within dark colours.
