Lehlogonolo Carol Khaas is an architect and artist, who knew from an early age that she wanted to build things. After having studied architecture, she’s come to understand that her purpose is to create space. Space for freedom and creativity, and space for people like herself, who have never understood what it means to have it in abundance. She tries to navigate a broad concept of space using maps, photographs of sites, moments she feels connected to, or affected by, raw materials and linework. She has always been interested in the physical traces left by a previous building and uses these traces as the key to beginning a project. Her final year project (2020) involved creating a museum space on a large plot of land that sits on the periphery of Cape Town. Her concept was to insert a collection of large volumed spaces into the ground that would be connected by a dramatically long aisle stretching from the beginning of the museum to the very end. This aisle would serve as a runway for prominent fashion shows. While studying, Lehlogonolo also started creating a number of concept collages. Through collage, she tries to express her interpretation of 'mind, body and soul' in relation to people - our differences and similarities.
