No, not a calculator, but a tape recorder!! This is a TI cassette recorder which is constructed by General Electric, as I will show some GE recorders that use the same designs. This is not a Hi-Fi recorder, it is made for recording computer data or basic sound recording such as dictation. But it does do a pretty good job recording things, and even live music (I did not show that part on the video, sorry). The record circuit uses DC bias, so you do get some slight distortion on the highs sometimes, but it sounds pretty good overall. The transport in this (and the GE recorders I show) is one of the most reliable designs I have come across in my collecting of recorders. In every machine that uses that particular design or variation of that design, pretty much every single one has the original belt still in good condition with strong rewind and fast-forward, strong enough even for tapes that don't want to move that freely. I have to give a thumbs up to whoever designed the mechanics of these machines, as they are robust and very, very reliable. One can expect this recorder to last years and years. Already 29 years sitting unused and the machine runs perfectly.
