Upon arriving at the cafe in Vienna we have a short wait in line before we're seated and within minutes the food and drinks we've ordered arrives at our table. After a late night and a slow start, we decided to make up for lost time by treating ourselves to Vienna’s most iconic dessert for lunch: the legendary Sachertorte (Sacher Torte). We set our sights on the original home of this cake, Café Sacher at the Sacher Hotel, and set off on a scenic 30-minute walk through the city. Vienna is just as beautiful on foot, especially in the crisp early autumn weather! 🏨 Café Sacher Wien: Standing in Line for Tradition No visit to Vienna is complete without a stop at Café Sacher Wien. While there was a line, it was nothing compared to some of our previous food waits (looking at you, Peninsula!). Once inside, we were greeted with a tempting menu, packed with sweets, coffees, and a surprising array of savory dishes. With anticipation building, we finally settled in for our cake adventure. 🍫 The Classic Sachertorte Experience First up was the original Sachertorte—the chocolate cake with a layer of apricot jam, a chocolate glaze, and a dollop of unsweetened whipped cream. The verdict? Subtle, sophisticated flavors that grow more enjoyable with each bite. The cake is best savored slowly, letting the chocolate and apricot blend together. The unsweetened cream balances the richness of the cake, highlighting its classic taste. 🥄 Chocolate on Chocolate: Iced Chocolate Drink To double down on the chocolate experience, we ordered a Wiener Eisschokolade mit Schlagobers (iced chocolate with ice cream, whipped cream, and pralines). Absolutely decadent and rich, this cold chocolate drink perfectly complemented our cake. No such thing as “too much chocolate” in Vienna! 🍰 Exploring Viennese Cakes: Liliput (Original Sacher Gewürzgugelhupf) We didn’t stop at one cake! Sam tried the Liliput, a spiced Viennese ring cake with ginger and candied orange: The Liliput delivered a zesty, festive flavor—almost like a holiday cake. Both cakes were so different, we couldn’t pick a favorite! Our top tip: alternate bites of each cake to truly appreciate the unique flavors. ☕ Viennese Coffee Culture: Wiener Melange Our cake lunch wasn’t complete without sampling the Wiener Melange—a classic Viennese coffee made with espresso, steamed milk, and whipped cream: The coffee was rich, frothy, and smooth, not too strong and perfect with all the sweet treats. As is tradition in Vienna, the coffee came with a cute mini glass of water on the side. 💸 How Much Does It Cost? You might expect a splurge, but our total came to 26 Euros for two people—including two cakes and two specialty drinks. Not bad at all for an iconic experience in a famous café! The atmosphere, history, and flavors are worth every cent. 👣 Final Thoughts & Sweet Recommendations Café Sacher is a must-visit in Vienna for cake and coffee lovers.
