Journey with us as we hike atop the Mulanje Massif, Malawi's highest mountain. A granite inselberg rising 3,002 meters above sea level. It's a steep and challenging incline to the plateau above. The mountain is known for its mystery. Disappearances and deaths have been recorded over the years along with stories of magic and the supernatural. After all, the mountain's highest peak is named "Sapitwa" which is Chichewa meaning, "Don't go there." But if you do, definitely take a guide, check-in with the forestry office and pack enough provisions. Despite all the stories, we've always felt safe and don't have any interesting stories to tell except about the weather which can change quickly and suddenly. If the fog becomes too thick, it's hard to see. This is where a guide is essential as you can quickly be disoriented. We always book with Snowden of Mulanje Adventures (+265 884137533). Find them also on Instagram! Mulanje Mountain is a glorious hike not yet overrun by tourists or large groups. There are 9 different mountain huts to choose from depending on the path you are taking. Their provisions range: some have mattresses and blankets and others are more basic. There are numerous paths and peaks to choose from. Some lead to the highest points while others arrive at pools, lookout points and waterfalls. All food and drinks should be carried with you up the mountain as none can be found there. On this hike we visited the CCAP Hut which was originally built in the 1890s and has been refurbished. We used the Boma Path which starts near the Mulanje boma at the lodge Kara O'Mula. One can also reach this place using another route along the Likhubula side. Make sure you subscribe to our channel to not miss any new content!
