When seventy-one-year-old Ruth, her forty-six-year-old daughter Celia, and eleven-year-old granddaughter Mae fled the Ashford ranch in Grimes County, Texas on a Saturday night in winter 1884 after Ruth noticed twenty-three-year-old Thomas Ashford watching Mae with predatory intent despite sharecropping being slavery in all but name twenty years after the war's end, they escaped into the pine forests with nothing but cornbread and a canteen while three armed men including Thomas himself pursued them with bloodhounds through the darkness until something else began stalking them all—a seven-foot creature with pale milky eyes and distorted almost-human features that the women first sensed pacing them through the underbrush before it revealed itself when Thomas caught up to Ruth and was about to whip her, at which point the creature they would later learn was called the Haunt emerged from the trees and killed Thomas by lifting him by the throat and throwing him against a tree while telling Ruth to run, a dark entity that an old Black man named Moses later explained through his grandfather's journal was an ancient thing that fed on guilt and fear and had a particular hatred for those who caused suffering to the innocent, protecting the three women as they crossed into Louisiana and eventually reached Ruth's cousin Esther's boarding house in Shreveport where they built new lives while the Haunt continued watching over them from the shadows, proving that sometimes in 1884 East Texas the real monsters protected runaways from the human ones.
