Iceland defeated France in men's Group A on Saturday, 30-29, in a rematch of the 2008 Beijing championship match that saw the French walk away with gold. While not an elimination game, Iceland's victory makes a major statement in the handball tournament. Iceland star Olafur Stefansson scored four goals, but it was his teammates Alexander Petersson, Aron Palmarsson, and Gudjon Valur Sigurdsson that carried the load with a combined 16 goals between them. They peppered all-world French goalkeeper Thierry Omeyer all game long, rarely being denied in goal-scoring situations. Iceland maintained a slim lead for nearly the entire match, never pulling away from France but making crucial defensive stops to halt French runs. With a one-goal lead and under one minute to play, Iceland found a way to stop France's final attempt and and hang on for the 30-29 win. The two high-powered offenses provided fireworks all game long, and both look like serious medal contenders heading into quarterfinal play. They each play one more match on Monday to decide their quarterfinal seeds. Iceland remains perfect at 4-0 in group play while France dropped to 3-1, tied with Sweden in points for second place with a matchup between the two teams set for Monday. Iceland will clinch first place in Group A with a win over Great Britain on Monday, the host nation which has provided plenty of entertainment for hometown fans but has not been competitive on the score sheet.
