Australians returned to Sydney’s Bondi Beach to reflect on a community shaken but defiant in the wake of a tragic shooting that killed 15 victims as the site was reopened to the public on Thursday (December 18). Standing near the site, JJ Hecht spoke of the resilience and unity emerging from the devastation. "It's not just being in the crime scene," he said. "It's our entire feeling throughout this whole devastating act. And I would tell you, it's extremely painful and devastating. But we're not broken. We're stronger. We're better and more proud than before. The alleged father-and-son gunmen opened fire as hundreds of people celebrated Hanukkah on Sydney's famous Bondi Beach on Sunday (December 14). The attack, which shocked the nation and led to fears over rising antisemitism, appears to have been inspired by the Islamic State, authorities say. Police allege the attack was carried out by Sajid Akram, 50, and his 24-year-old son Naveed. Sajid was shot dead by police at the scene, while Naveed Akram was charged with 59 offenses including murder and terror charges on Wednesday (December 17) after waking from a coma.
