[Apologies for bad sound quality! I was learning to make videos, with too low processing power, which froze the arrangement at it is.] The numbers of mass whale/dolphin strandings appear to be growing, and there are two obvious possible culprits. One is absolutely proven, and the other might be pretty soon. Military sonar and underwater exploration air-guns can both cause the whale family - inc. dolphins - to do anything they can to get out of the water. The noise that sonar and air guns create is extremely loud and can travel for enormous distances. And this is not just because of how loud they are, but also because the sea water is a fantastic medium if you want to amplify sound. Sound travels up to 4 times faster in water, than in air that is at the same temperature. Furthermore, sound waves also hold their volume in water much better than in the air. Its a toxic situation for whales, especially as we humans are using more and more powerful military sonar, and underwater exploration air guns. We have definitely become more militaristic, and we are most certainly exploring more for oil and gas. The noise they create can cause brain bleeds, including strokes, and ear bleeds too. And if the whales do really feel the need to beach themselves, they are likely to die from heatstroke. A painful end for any creature. If this video moves you, please let your elected politicians know that you are not happy about this situation, and inform them about the current plight of the whale family, because I havn't even touched on the increasing numbers of mega ships using our shipping lanes in this video. This can cause groups of whales to move from long-held breeding/hunting grounds (you know - their regular homes), due to the noise from enormous ships, with larger noisier engines, which are built attached to their hulls, thus increasing the amplification. But it is the collapsing air bubbles created by their enormous propellors that appears to be the most harmful to whales. It's not looking good for whales in general, so please do what you can to spread the word! 00:00 2020 Tasmania whale beachings 01:23 2018 New Zealand whale beachings 01:47 Historical whale beachings 02:00 Sonar as a cause for beachings, inc 2018 Bahamas beachings 04:00 Exploration air guns as a cause for beachings 05:19 Conclusion & Outro ----------------------------------------------- Videos, featured under Fair Use Policy, and other references 2020 Tasmania, Australia whale beachings (The Telegraph): • Hundreds more pilot whales now feared dead... 2018 Rakiura/Stewart Island, New Zealand whale beachings, + info about other strandings neaby (New Zealand Government, Department of Conservation): https://www.doc.govt.nz/news/media-re... 1902 Cape Cod, Massachusetts, US historic whale beachings (NOAA - US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration): https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fi... 2000 NE/NW Providence Channels, Bahamas whale beachings + sonar/air guns causing whale beachings (Sonic Sea film): https://www.sonicsea.org/film 2001 NOAA/US Navy REPORT - US military sonar proved to cause 2000 whale beachings in Bahamas (US Government, joint report): https://repository.library.noaa.gov/v...
