Here is my rendition of the 2nd movement from Alberto Ginastera's 1947 work, Suite de danzas criollas. Entitled Allegro rustico, it is a short dance of only 34 measures, with an ABA′B′A′′form. This movement employs the rhythm of the gato, as well as the zamba; popular nineteenth century gaucho dances. (In Argentina, criollo is used for people whose ancestors were already present in the territory in the colonial period, regardless their race.) Some believe that the term ‘danza criolla’ derives it’s origins from an internationally popular style of music and dance in the 18th century; namely, the contradanse. It was an English country dance which was adopted at the court of France. Contradanza was brought to America and there took on folkloric forms. Criollo is also synonymous for gauchos (Argentine cowboys), and in general all that pertains to their lifestyle.
