Running Springs The mountain community is located 6,000 feet above sea level in the heart of the San Bernardino Mountains. Running Springs is only ninety minutes east of Los Angeles or three hours north of San Diego. It is centrally located between Snow Valley Ski Resort and Lake Arrowhead, and 17 miles west of Big Bear Lake. The first people to settle here were the Serrano people (“mountain people”). They got their name from Spanish priest Father Garces in 1776, but called themselves Yuhaviatam (“people of the pines”). Numerous mortar holes can be seen throughout the area, made by the Serranos grinding acorns into meal. Native Americans settled here due to the rich natural resources. They gathered acorns and herbs, also hunting deer, rabbits and other wildlife. Snow Valley Mountain Resort is a ski resort located in Running Springs, California, United States. It is the oldest continually operating ski resort in Southern California and is also one of four ski resorts in the San Bernardino National Forest. From when it was started in 1924 up to what has been done in recent years.
