The New Testament is deeply rooted in the language, imagery, and theological framework of the Old Testament. Its writers consistently employ allusions, quotations, and narrative echoes drawn from the Hebrew Scriptures to interpret the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus and to articulate the identity and mission of the early Christian community. These Old Testament allusions are not merely decorative or incidental; they function as a primary means of communication, shaping meaning and grounding new claims in the authoritative texts familiar to their original audiences. When we as modern readers fail to recognise these allusions, we risk overlooking the richness and depth of the New Testament’s message and, in some cases, misunderstanding the writer’s intent altogether. The New Testament fulfils and unveils what the Old Testament anticipates. The promises, types, symbols, and prophecies of the Old Testament find their clarity and completion in Christ and the gospel. What is hinted at in shadows and figures in the Old Testament becomes clear and fully expressed in the New Testament, showing one unified story of God’s redemptive plan.
