Fr. Dott. Simon Ee Kim Chong, CDD In mid-September 1922, the priests of Cardinal Celso Costantini’s home diocese jointly presented him with a crosier of exceptional artistic value. This masterpiece was crafted by Eugenio Del Puppo, a humble yet highly skilled goldsmith from Venice. The idea and arrangement for this gift were initiated by Fr. Giuseppe Marin, who had been Cardinal Costantini’s classmate during his student years. The crosier was dedicated to a man who had labored as a messenger of peace during the crisis in Fiume, and its design therefore bears profound symbolic meaning. The Lamb and olive branches adorning the staff represent Christ, the Prince of Peace. At the center of the crosier’s circular head, one clearly sees a Lamb resting upon the Book of Revelation, encircled by finely wrought olive branches. Upon close observation, some branches intertwine with the golden cross above the Lamb, creating a continuous and radiant movement that evokes thanksgiving and worship. The crosier is made entirely of gold and silver, its delicate rings inlaid with lapis lazuli. The broader ring at the beginning of the spiral forms a knot, within which appear four silver reliefs symbolizing the Four Evangelists. Each figure is set within a niche of enameled background, bordered by tiny gold beads as decoration. Overall, this work—through its refined engraving and harmonious color composition—embodies a vision of nobility and devotion, revealing the extraordinary artistry of the Venetian goldsmith whose humility concealed remarkable genius. In November 1922, Archbishop Costantini carried this precious gift with him as he journeyed toward the distant East. Welcome to use it, but please indicate the source and give glory to the Lord who loves us.
