There are a lot of videos where people make shooting boards to use hand planes to do angled cuts for miters, cut exact part lenghth, etc. I have a Bench Dog No. 62 Low Angle Jack Plane that I got from Rockler, and since I want to make miter corner pieces for my next two boxes for the top and bottom frames, I decided to make an adjustable shooting board to make angles using the plane. Since I have the fancy sled for my table saw, I do not need the miter gauge that came with the sawstop contracter saw that I have, so I decided to see if I could use that to make an adjustable shooting board. Using various scraps, I came up with something that looks like it will not only work with my plane, but also with my sanding blocks that use belt sander belts. That is good, as until my plane blade sharpening skills improve, using the sanding belt block can take up the slack, even if it makes some dust. Plus you can get different grit belts to use, and so could do fairly precise trimming. I left enough space on the base piece to be able to angle the miter gauge either way to do cuts, that way if I ever run into needing to cut the other direction on a part, I can do so. Some sleds only allow one direction of planing, and there are a number of good videos online which explain why you may need to also go the other way to prevent tear out and get a good cut. This method also should allow me to do other angles fairly easily if that ever is needed such as for segmented angled boxes or bowls or who knows what else. This method also is far easier than using a hand file to clean up the mitered edges which is what I did on the last box that used those types of corners. So I am happy with it so far.
