The Dalmore Distillery was founded in 1839. The distillery was long run by the noble Scottish Mackenzie clan. A member of the clan once saved the life of King Alexander III on a deer hunt by stabbing a deer that attacked him at the last second. In response, the king was so grateful that he allowed the Mackenzie clan to bear the royal twelve-pointed stags on their coat of arms. This symbol is still shown on Dalmore bottles today. As early as 1874, four stills were used there, and in 1966 this was increased to eight.
