I like to use this when I have no idea at all. Especially for beginners, it's easier to just let everything flow and try it out in the sketchbook than directly on the canvas. If you do this regularly, you'll eventually be able to realise it on the canvas without any problems and you'll also have a nice little collection of ideas at the same time.
