ABOUT THE EVENT John Dos Passos called postwar Germany “Land of the Fragebogen.” Disseminated in millions of copies to post-war Germans in the American zone, the compulsory denazification questionnaire asked 131 questions about membership in the NSDAP, SS, SA, and fifty other affiliated associations. The "Fragebogen", completed by many literary authors like Erich Kästner and Ina Seidel, also inspired writers on both sides of the Atlantic to represent it in fiction and non-fiction. There was even a song about it, and the publisher Ernst Rowohlt prompted an author to write an entire novel in the form of answers to the questionnaire. Often perceived as an embodiment of American culture, it may have been created with the help of German Marxist intellectuals in exile, who hoped that denazification would bring about revolutionary change in Germany. The keynote serves as the closing talk of the conference "The Ambiguous Semantics of 'Reeducation' in Transnational and Transhistorical Perspective" which will take place online from February 16-18, 2022. The conference examines the discourse, meanings, and practices of re-education from colonialism and the post-WWII period to its present-day usages. ____________________________ ABOUT THE SPEAKER Werner Sollors received the Dr. phil. degree from the Freie Universität Berlin and taught there, at Columbia University, at the Universitá degli Studi di Venezia, and for more than three decades at Harvard University, where he is now Henry B. and Anne M.
