This time we go for a walking tour of the ruins of Borgholm Castle (Borgholm slott). I have to admit I had no real idea about what to expect when walking into the castle, what little I had seen from it made me expect a more or less hollowed out castle ruin that I'd walk through in about 10 minutes but I sure was wrong. It seemed whenever I turned a new corner there was more and more of the place to explore. There's a museum-area, there's multiple intact floors (well, intact enough to allow you to visit at least) a courtyard with a complete separate building and so much more, while walking around it almost felt like I would never be able to walk to every corner of this Swedish castle ruin before they closed. Borgholm castle's foundation dates back to the 12th century when a keep surrounded by a bailey was built there and over the centuries it served as a defensive installation that got damaged, rebuilt and improved upon many times but at the end of a Swedish & Danish war in 1613 the castle was no longer in a state to serve as a defensive castle. Instead, around 1650 work started on constructing a unified baroque palace there but even though work went on for over 50 years they never finished. After that the castle was almost abandoned for 100 years, until 1803, when a dyehouse was established in it's northern wing. Unfortunately a few years later a fire started in the dyehouse which quickly spread around the castle severely damaging it.
