What are the skills and characteristics that employers seek most in a future employee? "So it wasn't so much about the cows. It wasn't about the sheep. It wasn't about the pigs. It was about the chance to learn how to put these thoughts together in my brain, and then be able to tell somebody else how I'm thinking and why I did something.'" -- Darcy Gurule, FFA alum from Eustis-Farnam High School According to a 2009 survey by CareerBuilder.com and Robert Half International, employers listed creative thinking, initiative, and the ability to multitask as the most important characteristics in a job application next to having the basic job qualifications. The Nebraska Department of Education brought together a group of business leaders, HR professionals and educators to learn what employers in the state wanted in an employee. The group landed on three critical elements: 1. Technical skills 2. Problem solving and critical thinking ability 3. Leadership, dependability and teamwork These education goals help focus schools' career and technical education programs, ensuring a focus on the whole student; from overall academic performance, skill building, and social-emotional growth.
