Wood Chopping competition at Melbourne. Watch as these professional wood choppers cut down logs with large axes. Woodchop The Royal Melbourne Show Woodchop Championships attracted some of the world’s best woodchop athletes, from Australia and overseas. The Victoria Axemen's Council was formed in 1970 to unite and promote the sport of Woodchopping in Victoria. The first official woodchopping competition took place in 1870 in the Tasmanian town of Ulverstone and was the result of a pub bet between a Tasmanian local and a Victorian visitor. A popular feature of regional and royal shows the sport of woodchopping has continued to grow and now includes national as well as international competitions. Why Woodchopping? Woodchopping is a uniquely Australian sport that is enjoyed by competitors and spectators throughout the world. It provides opportunities for individuals to challenge themselves both physically and mentally, whilst offering the thrill of competition in front of enthusiastic crowds. Woodchoping has a rich Australian history that echoes back to the timber workers of Australia's settlement. The underhand, standing block, tree felling and sawing events still use the techniques employed by these pioneers. The sport is family centred and accessible to competitors anywhere from 9 to 90 years of age, and skill levels from novice to world championship level. How do you become a woodchopper? The challenging combination of balance, hand-eye coordination, strength and stamina whilst weilding razor sharp axes makes technique a key component of Woodchopping. It requires a personal committment and a great deal of training. After an initial workshop and introduction to the sport, beginner competitors are usually paired with a mentor / coach to guide them through their long term training. Whilst wood chopping is primarily an individual sport, it is important that an experienced axeman be on hand to offer advice on improving technique and training safely.
