It's great that Donkey Kong has finally returned with a new game. It's even greater that it's a brand new 3D game. But here's an indie game I've kept track of that means to bring back that itch you'd get for his 2D Country games. This game looks pretty cute, but its cuteness may be offset by how difficult it can get, at times. (11/15/2025 UPDATE: I have to kinda stress that most of this playthrough will be of the Version 1.00 PS5 build of the game. There have been a few bugs I’ve encountered covering this game that may or may not have been dealt with as you’re reading this, moreso if you are playing the PC/Steam release of this game, which can receive patches faster than the console releases. Sorry for any inconveniences onward.) ---------- Here's the story of Windswept: It's very simple, really. A little duckling named Marbles had just recently hatched from his egg. Suddenly, he is SWEPT away by a massive tornado. During the first stage, he discovered that a baby turtle, named Checkers, had also lost his way from this same tornado. These two baby animals decided to join forces, and go on a huge buddy-to-buddy adventure to find their way back home. Lots of baddies threaten to stand in their way, but they'll run into even more buddies that wanna help! ---------- You start this game off as just Marbles. His basic attack is to twirl his wings around. Do this while moving off a ledge to give you more time to jump from it, even while you're still falling. Some places all this a "Coyote Jump". You can also charge up this attack for burst of speed. Like... a different kind of Spin Dash. Marbles, with those same wings, can also flap them in midair to Glide and fall down more slowly. ---- Past meeting Checkers helpless on the ground for the first time, you'll usually run into one of these to in a Buddy Bubble. They each can only take one hit at a time, but you have unlimited lives. Marbles slides along the ground with his shell, and this can also be used as a Coyote Jump. His more unique move is to Ground Pound, which can let him attack from above and drop through certain elements in the level. Right after landing with a Ground Pound, you can then go into a Drop Dash, which bursts him forward for a moment, even ignoring gravity for a moment. You can even unleash a Drop Dash right as you stop dropping to give Checkers a bit of a Double Jump. This Drop Dash can be changed into other things, like switching back to Marbles. ---- Both Marbles & Checkers have their own Piggyback actions. When Marbles is in the lead, he will toss Checkers in his shell in front of him as a long-distance attack, meanwhile, when Checkers is in the lead, he can make Marbles toss him straight upwards. This can also be used like a Double Jump. Overall, this game is gonna make you use both of these critters to their best. From here I realized: Mastering the duck is gonna feel great, but mastering the turtle is gonna feel amazing! Wield his Ground Pound and Drop Dash well, and you could pull of some real Celeste-like maneuvers in this game! ---------- Aside from the Star Coins that are this game's currency, there are three different kinds of Coins to collect for other things. Crescent Coins are collected from completing Bonus Areas, which will have you either Reach the Goal, Collect the Coins, or Bash the Baddies. These Bonus Areas can be retried as much as you want. There will always be 5 Comet Coins that spell out the word "COMET". Collect them all, and then an actual comet-shaped coin will appear at the end of the stage. Cloud Coins need to be searched out. They'll either be hidden somewhere or you'll need to do a certain task. The main goal collectibles are colorful Pinwheels. You can get this right at the goal if you can press down on the goal's pressure switch hard enough. If you manage to pull it off, your baby animal will even do a little dance! There will also be further other collectibles to seek out past this, such as records for each of this game's music tracks. ---------- One interesting feature of this game are the "Assists + Modifiers" under "Options - Gameplay" when you pause the game. You get to make a lot of changes to this game to make it easier... or *harder*. You can enable Invincibility and Infinite Jumps, or you can have it so that these babies bite the dust anytime they touch a Coin... or even when they hit an enemy. You can generate your own Buddy Bubbles and Checkpoints... Or take them all away from the level. You can even just skip playing through a stage entirely, but if I did that, then what would be the point of this playthrough I'm showing here, yeah? There's more than this to be had, but I'm mostly just not gonna touch any of this stuff, for now. It's all there if you want to... or NEED to use it on your own run, however.
