Welcome to a surreal journey deep into the heart of the California desert! Salvation Mountain, created by the late Leonard Knight, is a towering testament to love, faith, and outsider art. It’s an unforgettable, colorful landscape painted onto the dusty wilderness. Mr. Knight created a large hot air balloon balloon over a 15 year period emblazoned with "God Is Love". Turned out, It was too heavy, and rotted out in a snowstorm in Nebraska. After this failure, undeterred, he came to California, and started his next project, a large mountain. The first attempt collapsed, but still undeterred, he continued, and built the current "Salvation Mountain". Salvation Mountain is showing terrible signs of wear, since I last visited, parts appear to have washed out, the middle part (The Museum) is closed and it looks like one good desert storm might finish it for good...
