The Pond - The Law of Polarity On the shore of an ancient sea, a wise master and his apprentice stood watching the waves. The master asked the apprentice to "draw a line in the sand". The apprentice replied, "I have drawn the line, but it's just a simple mark. What does it teach me?" The master said, "look closer, what do you see?" The apprentice observed, "there are two sides to the line!” The master said, "exactly, what appears as a single line, also has two edges. This is the law of polarity. For anything to exist, it must have opposing forces—like day and night, joy and sorrow." The apprentice asked, "but why must there always be two?" The master replied, "before you drew the line, the sand was smooth—representing all that IS. When you create (the line), your action brings forth the polarity." The apprentice wondered aloud, "when I pressed into the sand, it made ripples beyond the line?" The master said, "yes, every action sends ripples that affect more than we see. These ripples aren't good or bad; they simply are. Your task is to observe and respond to them. The apprentice asked, "so, to experience life fully, I should notice the polarity in what I create?" The master smiled, "yes, to understand life, you must observe and embrace polarity. Be it good or bad, joy or sorrow. By observing and acknowledging the whole, then you can start to truly comprehend all that IS." As the sun set, the apprentice felt the depth of the lesson. The master placed a hand on his shoulder. "Remember, embrace the thought, the action, the emotion, and the polarity, for in their dance, all can be revealed." Moral: Embracing both sides of every experience (the polarity) leads to a deeper understanding of what IS. NOTE: This fable introduces the concept of polarity, even in a simple line there are two edges created from the one line. The idea is that for anything singular to exist, there must also be the polarity or dual aspects within it.
