Shortcutz Amsterdam is deeply saddened with the passing of one of our jury members, director George Sluizer. A strong enthusiast for new film talent, George was a great supporter of the new generation of filmmaking. He believed in connecting them with the more established names of Dutch cinema to exchange ideas and move the craft forward. On Tuesday 16 September, Shortcutz Amsterdam welcomed George on stage to share his passion for cinema and his experience through over five decades of filmmaking. On that evening, in what would become George’s last filmed interview, he confessed to still have plans for new projects and was truly excited about the prospect of making a new feature film. But he also admitted to being frail because of his illness, saying “I’m not sure what will win: if my body and illness or if my creativity.” The interview is part of Shortalkz, a programme about film which will be launched soon by Shortcutz Amsterdam. Because of the current circumstances, Shortcutz Amsterdam has decided to share this last interview and let George Sluizer’s words resonate once more with those he has inspired over the years. This special episode also includes an excerpt of George's speech at Shortcutz Amsterdam Annual Awards 2014, which took place in January this year at Eye. On that occasion, George accepted the Career Award we so proudly granted him. To George Sluizer, we say thank you for his dedication, for his beautiful work, for his lessons in film and for always believing in European cinema. You will be missed.
