Tema : The Art of Engineering

In early 2013, film maker Antony Rieck and a team of engineering colleagues (Benny Man, Garrett Bray, Tim McMinn, Oliver Paine and Peter De Bruin) from the Australian engineering firm, BG&E, travelled to the village of Tema in the Usumbara Mountains of Tanzania. The objective: to fund, design and supervise the construction of three bridges and one culvert. Seasonal flooding had damaged the essential infrastructure linking this remote village to the adjacent market areas; consequently, the area's inaccessibility by buses, trucks and cars has led to a decline in economic development and increased poverty. This short documentary explores how Western engineering knowledge combined with African methods of construction and a supportive community effort has proved a simple but powerful success. More importantly, it shows how success must be measured not only by the completion of four new structures, but by the transfer of knowledge. Only through this exchange of knowledge can the local community be more empowered with new skills towards self-sustainability. For Antony, it is a realisation of how a small investment can directly and significantly impact a community's survival. This is the art and spirit of engineering. Film by Antony Rieck
