Onboard No.9’s Incredible Unaided Haul of 13 Over the S&C. For Old Times Sake!

The Fishwick Fellsman of 2nd August 2003 was loaded to the maximum 580 tons as it was scheduled to be hauled by the mighty 71000 Duke of Gloucester but a last minute failure resulted in 60009 Union of South Africa being drafted-in to deputise even though there was no diesel back-up! Hobson’s choice at Manchester meant I had to settle for a door window in the first coach but this turned out to be a blessing when capturing the A4’s (compared with 71000) more muted exhaust, making this video as much about the sound as the visuals. Leaving Blackpool North I give a brief taste of the stations and climbs on route as we quickly make our way to Hellifield and Settle Junction. Here the real test begins and I feature the majority of the 15 mile climb to Blea Moor. If you were ever dubious about an A4’s pulling ability, this will leave you in no doubt about their capabilities. Having reached the approach to Ribblehead Station, I suddenly noticed a problem with the camera and it took until the other side of Ribblehead Viaduct to sort it out. Luckily I filmed the same route over the S&C behind 6201 Princess Elizabeth in 2002 and so for completeness I have inserted the crossing from Pathfinder’s “The Cumbrian Fellsman”. Trespassers permitting, we head over the top of the route for a service stop at Garsdale before diving down the Eden Valley, finishing with one last brilliant acceleration from a stand before we pull into Carlisle. As the A4 finally departs for servicing we are sadly reminded that; for No.9, scenes like these are already consigned to history and fond memory. Footage is cropped and re-mastered 4:3 format SD.
