How to drain and refill CVT fluid (transmission fluid) and set fluid level on 2016 Toyota Corolla. 1. Raise the car and safely rest it on jack stands, make sure it’s leveled. 2. Remove the front left wheel (driver side) and wheel well plastic cover covering the CVT refill plug. 3. Using 15/16 or 24 mm socket remove the refill plug and gasket (crush washer) from the CVT. The type of fluid should be stamped on the refill plug. 4. Using 6 mm hex socket remove the drain plug (overflow plug) and gasket from the CVT. Have a measuring container under the drain plug hole. Some fluid will drain. 5. Using 6 mm hex socket remove the plastic overflow tube (transmission oil filler tube) from the CVT pan and drain the fluid. 6. Measure the amount of fluid drained. 7. Using 6 mm hex socket install the plastic overflow tube to the CVT pan. Tighten until it stops, don't over tighten it. It has a very low torque: 1.7 Nm (17 kg.cm, 15 in-lb). 8. Temporarily install the drain plug with old gasket. 9. Add new CVT fluid to the refill hole using the same amount of fluid drained. 10. Temporarily install the refill plug with old gasket to avoid fluid spillage. 11. Depress and hold the brake pedal and start the engine. Slowly move the shift lever from P to D, and then back to P (keep the shift lever in each position for approximately 3 seconds). Allow the engine to idle for 30 seconds to warm it up. 12. Turn the ignition switch off. 13. Repeat steps 3 to 12. 14. Repeat steps 3 to 10. *At the 3rd refill add slightly more fluid than was drained. ADJUST FLUID LEVEL. When adjusting the fluid level, turn off all electrical systems, such as the air conditioning, lighting system, electric fan and audio system, to reduce load. 15. ADJUST FLUID TEMPERATURE. When not using a scanner, using SST: 09843-18040 (Toyota Diagnosis Check Wire) or a jumper wire, connect terminals 13 (TC) and 4 (CG) of the DLC3 (OBD2) with the ignition switch off. 16. Depress and hold the brake pedal and start the engine. 17. Slowly move the shift lever from P to D, and then back to P (keep the shift lever in each position for approximately 3 seconds). 18. While observing the D shift indicator on the instrument cluster, move the shift lever back and forth between N and D at an interval of less than 1.5 seconds for 6 seconds or more. Do not pause for more than 1.5 seconds. Performing this operation will cause the vehicle to enter fluid temperature detection mode. 19. Check that the D shift indicator comes on for 2 seconds. When fluid temperature detection mode is activated, the D shift indicator on the instrument cluster comes on for 2 seconds (if the D shift indicator does not come on for 2 seconds, perform the procedure again). 20. After D shift indicator comes on for 2 seconds, move the shift lever to P. 21. Release the brake pedal. 22. Disconnect the terminals 13 (TC) and 4 (CG) of the DLC3 (OBD2). Make sure that terminals 13 (TC) and 4 (CG) are not connected. If the terminals are connected, the fluid level cannot be precisely adjusted due to fluctuations in engine speed. Even after the terminals are disconnected, fluid temperature detection mode remains active until the ignition switch is turned off. When the D shift indicator is on (the fluid temperature is within the fluid level adjustment temperature range 35 to 45°C (95 to 113°F). Immediately proceed to Adjust Fluid Level. If the D shift indicator is off [Below Fluid Level Adjustment Temperature: 35°C (95°F) or less]: Warm up the engine with the engine idling in engine idle speed control mode until the D shift indicator turns on. If the D shift indicator is blinking [Above Fluid Level Adjustment Temperature: 45°C (113°F) or more]: Stop the engine and wait until the fluid temperature drops to 35°C (95°F) or less. Then perform the adjust fluid temperature procedure again from the beginning. 23. Using 6 mm hex socket remove the drain plug (overflow plug) and gasket from the CVT. 24. If the amount of fluid that comes out of the drain plug hole (overflow plug hole) is large, wait until the fluid flow slows and only drips come out. If no fluid comes out, remove the refill plug and gasket. Then add fluid through the refill hole until fluid comes out of the drain (overflow) plug hole. Wait until the fluid flow slows and only drips come out. 25. Install a new gasket and the drain plug (overflow plug) to the CVT and torque it to 40 Nm or 30 ft-lb. 26. Turn the ignition switch off. 27. Install a new gasket and the refill plug to the CVT and torque it to 49 Nm or 36 ft-lb. 28. Reinstall the wheel well cover, install the wheel, lower the vehicle and torque the wheel nuts to 76 ft-lb.
