Today at the Odessa Police Department, we’re going to introduce you to our Sniper Team. “Being a sniper, you’re hailed to a higher standard,” said Sergeant Carlos Chavez. A higher standard for OPD’s Sniper Team. “We’re pretty close with each other, we spend a lot of time with each other,” said Sergeant Sergio Spencer. They spend time training for all sorts of scenarios. “Law enforcement snipers have a lot different job than what most people would perceive,” said Sergeant Justin Caid. Sergeant Carlos Chavez said, “Military is totally different from law enforcement, different rules of engagement are set in place.” But the reality is those dramatic images you typically see are just a snapshot. “Our primary job is to provide surveillance and information to the officers on the ground,” said Sergeant Justin Caid. Despite what most people think, shooting a criminal isn’t their main priority. “We have to protect life,” said Sergeant Carlos Chavez. Sergeant Justin Caid said, “You initially have to be assigned to the SWAT Team before being eligible. You have to be on the SWAT Team for a period of a couple of years before you’re eligible to apply for a sniper position. Of course, sometimes snipers do have to take action, but that does weigh heavily on their hearts. “It’s a big load because you’re making a shot that’s going to have to make sure it’s on the money or else it’s going to cost you somebody’s life,” said Sergeant Carlos Chavez.
