Drawing Near to Jesus – Baptism and Lord’s Supper How can we who died to sin still live in it? 3 Or are you unaware that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 Therefore we were buried with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too may walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in the likeness of his death, we will certainly also be in the likeness of his resurrection. Romans 6:2-5 (CSB) 1. Baptism Why Is baptism so important for us today? Why did Jesus Command his disciples to baptize believers? Baptism is a powerful picture of the Gospel Water is a metaphor of God’s judgement – and yet we come out unharmed Water is a symbol of a grave - and yet we come out alive and resurrected Water symbolizes purification and cleansing from sins – we come out forgiven 2. Communion 53 So Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life in yourselves. 54 The one who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day, 55 because my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. 56 The one who eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him. -- John 6:53-56 (CSB) Bread reminds us of His body given for us – true food Wine reminds us of His blood that was shed for us – true drink Participation in communion is the means to abiding in Him 30 It is from him that you are in Christ Jesus, who became wisdom from God for us — our righteousness, sanctification, and redemption,— 31 in order that, as it is written: Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord. -- 1 Corinthians 1:30-31 (CSB)
