The name Graves comes from the gravelly soils that characterize the region, which are ideal for viticulture. Graves has a long and rich history of wine production, dating back to the Middle Ages, when it was the main source of wine exported to England. The region is considered the birthplace of claret, a term that originally referred to the light red wines of Graves. The region is also home to Château Haut-Brion, one of the four original First Growths and the only one from Graves in the 1855 classification of Bordeaux wines.
